Child rights protection in the Republic of Moldova examined by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

On the 18th and the 19th of September, in Geneva, the delegation of the Republic of Moldova, led by Mrs. Stela Grigoras, Minister for Health, Labour and Social Protection, participated at the 76th session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which has examined the 4th and the 5th periodic reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the Republic of Moldova.

In her opening statement, the Head of the Moldovan Delegation highlighted the important achievements made by the Republic of Moldova in the protection of the rights of the child during the last 10 years, such as the reduction of the absolute poverty rate from 26% to 11%, tenfold reduction of the number of children in residential institutions, development of an integrated assistance and social services system for children.

The presentation was followed by a dialogue with the Members of the CRC, who have recognized the merits of the Moldovan authorities in the considerable progress achieved in the area of child rights protection. Members have also underlined the need to increase efforts for the protection of vulnerable groups. The questions addressed by the Committee aimed and deeply examining the measures adopted by the Government in the implementation of each article of the Convention, as well as broad questions regarding the mechanism for child rights protection in general, such as: functioning of the national institutions for the protection of human rights, ensuring equality and non-discrimination, implementation results of the Strategy for the justice sector reform.

At the end of the two-days meeting, Minister Stela Grigoras, Head of Delegation, has reiterated the Moldovan authorities’ commitment to implement the recommendations that the Committee will present after the evaluation. Mrs. Olga Khazova, CRC Rapporteur has appreciated the engagement of the Moldovan Government in advancing the reforms in the area of child rights protection and has encouraged our country to facilitate the participation of children in decision-making processes regarding the protection of their rights.
